Frequently Asked Questions

  • Every course, whether it’s an in-person course, a webinar or an on-demand course, lists the states that the course is approved in. If your state is not listed, then that course is not approved in your state.

  • If you chose to attend/watch a course that is not approved in your state, you will be responsible to requesting credit from your state. Most states require that providers submit courses 30-90 days before a course is held or taken and providers cannot get credit for course after the fact. Attorneys are welcome to request credit from their state and we will be happy to provide the documentation that state will request, but we will are not able. to make the request to your state for you.

  • If you have purchased an All-Access Subscription, you must add the courses to your account by using the “Add with Subscription” box to “purchase” in person courses and webinars. For on-demand courses, , not the “Products” box. Please click here to see a PDF of how to purchase courses with a subscription.

  • Comedian of Law will submit attendance and pay attendance fees to states that we had the courses pre-approved in and the state are provider report states (meaning the state requires that providers submit attendance vs attorneys). If a course wasn’t approved in a state or if your state is a self-reporting state, Comedian of Law will not submit your attendance. Current states that we offer courses in that are self-reporting: California, Florida, Iowa, Mississippi and Missouri.

  • Written materials are available for our courses and can be accessed in your COL account. Step by step instructions are available on our website under every webinar and on demand listing. Please click here for a screenshot of how to access the written materials.

  • Comedian of Law submits on-demand hours twice a month, around the 1st and the 15th. If your hours were taken within the last 3 weeks, please don’t contact our offices yet to find out why they aren’t showing up in your state’s account. If it’s been more than 3 weeks, you have checked your Comedian of Law account and the course(s) show that you completed all three steps properly (see attached pdf for a screenshot of this), you can contact us at info@comedianoflaw.com to find out why your hours aren’t reported. Please keep in mind that there are still states that record hours by hand (meaning providers email spreadsheets that then have to them be entered into your account by hand) and those states take much longer for hours to show up than states with actual attendance portals for providers.

  • If your state bar information isn’t showing up on your certificate of attendance it’s because you haven’t entered it into your account. To add your information to your account:

    1. Log into your COL account

    2. Click on “My Account”

    3. Scroll down to “Account Preferences” and click on the button labeled “Add or Edit Credit Reporting Organizations”.

Please keep in mind that we cannot report any hours to states if we don’t have your bar information.

  • After you purchased a webinar, you must register with Zoom in order to get your personal link to attend the webinar. There are instructions listed on every webinar listing on our website and on your emailed receipt. Please click here for a screenshot of the step-by-step instructions from our website.

  • Certificates of attendance for webinars are always sent within a week of the webinar. If you haven’t received yours yet, please search your junk/spam folder as it is most likely there. Attendance to provider reporting states is submitted to those states before certificates are sent out, so if your state is a provider report state and you received your certificate, your attendance has been submitted.

  • We did offer state specific bundles in the past, but the process of creating them and listing them on Freestone’s website is very laborious and we didn’t sell enough of them to warrant the amount of time it takes to create them. We found that most attorneys were purchasing a subscription, rather than bundles, so in 2024 we moved to offering only à la carte courses and the “All-Access Subscription”. You can purchase the subscriptions here: https://www.comedianoflaw.com/subscriptions.

  • The following is a quote from The New Jersey Courts website and can be viewed here:

“Through reciprocity, New Jersey will accept credits for courses that are not accredited in New Jersey, but are accredited in another mandatory CLE jurisdiction, provided the type of credit/course is not otherwise excluded by the BCLE Regulations  and does not exceed the credits allowed for teaching. Attorneys relying on reciprocity must ensure that they are also meeting the requirements of New Jersey's program. There is no fee for reciprocity. A course taken that has not been approved in a mandatory CLE jurisdiction will not have the benefit of reciprocity (BCLE Reg. 201:4). An attorney can seek credit for such courses with the individual attorney application for CLE credit.

  • The following is a quote from The New Jersey Courts website and can be viewed here:

“Under New York’s Approved Jurisdiction policy, so long as certain requirements are satisfied, New York attorneys may count towards their New York CLE requirement credit earned through participation in out-of-state courses accredited by a New York Approved Jurisdiction. The policy applies to both traditional live classroom-format and nontraditional-format courses (online, DVD, teleconference, etc.). Traditional live classroom-format courses are out-of-state if they take place outside of New York State. Nontraditional-format courses are out-of-state if the sponsor organization is headquartered outside of New York State.”

Comedian of Law courses are always approved in at least 2 of the “Group A” jurisdictions, which means that you are able to submit your attendance to NY without any supplemental documents being needed.

  • While we always strive to send out only accurate information, sometimes our marketing manager makes mistakes (as do all of us). If you ever receive an email with information that differs from our website, our website is always correct. It is checked multiple times before information is published, so it’s very unlikely it will be incorrect. If you are in doubt though, please contact us at info@comedianoflaw.com for clarification.

  • Outside of Black Friday, we usually do not offer discounts or have coupons. We are a small family company and we strive to always produce high quality content and try to price our products with the current market of like courses and our own expenses in mind. We know that many companies out there offer classes that are very inexpensive, but that is not our market. You will never see a poor recording of Joel robotically delivering information, as many of those companies do. Joel spends considerable time finding interesting content and working it to be entertaining as well as informative and on the presentation of that material. We also go to considerable expense with our technology equipment in order to offer the best recorded products we can.

  • If you have technical questions/issues, such as playback issues with an on demand course, please contact Freestone by clicking on the “Chat” button on the bottom right corner of the website, email them at freestonelearnersupport@communitybrands.com or call them at 866-702-3278. They are available Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm central time.

If you have questions about anything non-technical, please contact COL at info@comedianoflaw.com or by phone at 913-213-9823.

  • Indeed, Joel honestly believes that the internet is stored in the clouds and that leprechauns deliver emails. However, thanks to his talented son who is often referred to as The Wizard behind closed doors (Tech Jesus for the die hards), he has managed to create an online presence to rival that of comedic competitors like Jimmy Fallon and The Nebraska Offense. (This question and answer was added by our oldest son when he created the FAQ’s page template for us. Joel thought it was funny and asked to leave it on the page. For the record, he actually is smarter than Joel and Wendi put together. His real job is as a software engineer at Garmin.)
